Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: Symptoms, Risks, and How to Treat It

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: Symptoms, Risks, and How to Treat It

Posted on July 21, 2026July 27, 2026 by Dr. Vivek Loomba

One of the most common hand-wrist conditions is carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). This syndrome happens as a result of compression of the median nerve in a small space found in the wrist known as the carpal tunnel. The median nerve controls sensation in the thumb, index finger, middle finger, and part of the ring finger as well as the control of some of the muscles at the thumb’s base.

This condition is developed slowly and if not treated can limit a person in their activities such as typing and driving.

What Causes Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Compression of the Median Nerve

The main reason behind Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is that there is extra pressure on the median nerve. It could be due to swelling or inflammation in the wrist.

Factors That Contribute to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Some of the factors which might lead to CTS are:

  • Single-handed tasks
  • Extended use of computers or handheld devices
  • Injuries or fractures to the wrist
  • Arthritis and inflammation
  • Pregnancy-related fluid retention
  • Diabetes and thyroid problems
  • Being obese

Although single-handed tasks do not always lead to CTS, it may make the existing situation worse for patients.

Symptoms Recognition

Initial Warning Symptoms

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is usually experienced gradually, and symptoms can sometimes disappear only to reappear after a while. Some initial symptoms of this syndrome include:

  • Tingling and numbness of the thumb and fingers
  • Burning sensations in the hand
  • Hand pain at night
  • Loss of grip
  • Dropping of objects frequently

Many patients usually feel the symptoms when they are on the phone, reading a book, or even driving.

Advanced Symptoms

In case the disorder is not treated, then there can be:

  • Numbness
  • Weakness in the muscles around the base of the thumb
  • Difficulties in doing fine motor movements
  • Loss of hand coordination
  • Long-term nerve damage in extreme cases

Diagnosis early helps improve treatment results.

Who Is Most at Risk?

High-Risk Groups

Some people have a greater chance of contracting Carpal Tunnel Syndrome owing to their job, health conditions, or other factors.

Occupations with an Increased Likelihood of Contracting CTS

Workers who perform repetitive tasks with their hands may be more vulnerable, such as:

  • Office workers
  • Data entry operators
  • Factory workers
  • Assembly line workers
  • Musicians
  • Dentists
  • Hairstylists

Medical Conditions that Cause Increased Risk for CTS

There are some medical conditions that are linked to the risk of CTS such as:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Diabetes
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Pregnancy
  • Kidney disorders

These medical conditions do not necessarily cause CTS but may increase the risk of contracting the condition.

Diagnosis of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Physical Examination

A healthcare professional usually starts by conducting a physical examination and gathering details about the patient’s symptoms and health history.

Tests for Diagnosis

In order to verify the diagnosis, the physician may suggest the following:

  • Nerve conduction tests
  • EMG
  • Ultrasound
  • MRI in certain instances

These tests are used to assess the degree of nerve compression.

Effective Treatment Options

Non-Surgical Treatments

In most cases of mild to moderate severity, non-surgical treatment is enough for improvement.

Lifestyle Changes

The patient is usually instructed to:

  • Take frequent breaks from any repetitive work
  • Have good posture of the wrist
  • Stretching exercises
  • Use ergonomic keyboard and workstation

Medical Interventions

These interventions might be recommended by the physician:

  • Wrist splinting, particularly during nighttime
  • Prescription of anti-inflammatory drugs
  • Corticosteroids injection
  • Physical/occupational therapy

Surgical Treatment

In case of the lack of effect after conservative treatment or in case of nerve damage, surgical intervention is needed. Carpal tunnel release surgery means incision of the ligament squeezing the median nerve. Most patients show great results after recovery and rehabilitation.

Ways to Avoid Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Healthy Habits for Wrist Care

Not all instances are avoidable but healthy habits may lower the possibility:

  • Always maintain a neutral position of your wrist while doing work.
  • Avoid gripping any object too forcefully.
  • Take time out to stretch your hands and wrist.
  • Take breaks after performing repetitive movements.
  • Lose weight if you have an excess body weight.
  • Concentrate on managing your health disorders such as diabetes.

Conclusion

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a widespread but treatable disease that can be detected easily. Noticing symptoms like numbness, tingling sensation, and loss of strength in the hands may help in the detection of the disease and its management. Treatment can be by making ergonomic adjustments, physical therapy, medication, or even surgery and can enable people to perform normal activities without difficulties. Seeking professional medical assistance at the initial stages of the disease is the best way to avoid complications.
